You may want to put some daylilies in as well as hosta along the fence as they are reliable plants and can be divided and spread further along the yard over time. No real need for stepping stones unless you turn the whole lot into garden as you already have a sidewalk. I would start by making a bed that runs along the front fence and then along the property line and has some curves to it. It is available pretty inexpensively, and would look nice until you can upgrade. If a total replacement isn't possible, you might want to get a woven type available from Gardener's Supply.

It might be nice to get a privacy fence along the property line so you don't have to look at the neighbor's tires and such. And then it might need to be fertilized and weed, but the grass looks pretty healthy otherwise.

If you are going to keep the grass, it looks like it needs a really good raking out first to get rid of the dead clumps of grass.
